In november 2014 I had the chance to visit the winery of Aurelia Visinescu, Domeniile Sahateni (http://aureliavisinescu.com/) in judetul Buzau, Dealul Mare region.
We’ve spent a few hours in her company looking around, chatting and tasting wonderful wines.
It’s a little bit difficult to arrive there as in that part of the country there aren’t highways yet, but the winery worth the effort.
Studing oenologie, traveling abroad and collaborating with many wineries made Aurelia wanted to have her own place where to create. Her dream become true recently, when she had the opportunity to take advantage of the UE investments. Today is selling her wines both on the domestic market, where are higly appreciated by the wine lovers, and also internationally.
The winery is very modern and all technologized, while her wines respect the romanian traditional winemaking. The products are like her, very feminin and elegant, yet strong and with charater. Her efforts paid off when the gold medals and international press recognition begun to arrive.
The main grapes varieties are: : Feteasca Neagra, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir – for red wines and Feteasca Alba, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Tamăioasă Romănească and Muscat Ottonel for white wines. Aurelia Visinescu brand was launched at the end of 2010. Bearing the name and the signature of the oenologist, the line is made up by three sub-brands: Nomad, Artisan, Anima.” Bottled wine is stored as finite product in the modern warehouse while another part of the wine is aged in Romanian oak barriques and also bottle aged in the cellar. – from the website –
Once we’ve finished the tour we had a great tasting of almost all the wines…from all the brands!!!! I’m sharing with you my top 3
ANIMA – Pinot Noir – Deep dark red color. In the begining seemed closed both on the nose and the palate. Full of body, you fell right away the perfums of red fruits, raspberry, cherry and tobacco. A warm nose. Tight palate, assertive and high tannins, youthful, rich legs on the glass, a fat and heady wine, aromas of red cherry, spices, very powerful, lots of structure. Long finish, assertive tannins.
ARTISAN – Tamaioasa Romaneasca – very nice local grape. A pleasant discovery. Yellow lemon color with green reflections. Extremely fresh nose with plenty of citrus fruit, green apple and quince, with a light touch of wet rocks minerality. Full bodied and interesting.
KARAKTER – Chardonnay – The nose is intense with plenty of aromas of lychee, stone fruits, citric fruit. Full bodied, lush and almost unctuous on the palate, this combines sweetness, minerality and high acidity, feeling lively, balanced, fresh and profound. The finish is medium to long with mouth-watering acidity and lingering flavors.
